This Classroom in a Book is great for people who have light experience with InDesign. I designed an annual report for a local hospital and bought this book as a reference because all my previous experience was on ID3 and ID4. For whatever reason, the book doesn’t go through super simple basics that I wished it would have: curved lines, some typography basics, custom page numbering, etc.

I know they can’t include everything, but why wouldn’t they include a basic pointers section? I think a lot of new users would be attracted to this book because of the title and it’s written by the Adobe team. The book walks through projects, and if what you’re doing isn’t in their projects, it’s not going to explain how to do it.

Luckily, the Adobe website has good support and directions for some of the things the book was missing. All in all, I used the book for quite a bit, then figured out how to get the tips to work for the project I was designing. If I wouldn’t have had some prior experience, the book wouldn’t have helped much.

The major fallacy of the negative reviews of this book is that you can’t get the project files that are necessary to do the lessons; it’s completely not true.

As some folks have stated in reviews there is indeed a link to the files that can be found on “the last page” of the Kindle edition. As for the book itself; it’s standard “Classroom In A Book” fare. If you’re a graphic designer like me and you have to learn how to use this software because clients or teachers demand it then you have to at least start with this edition to get yourself up speed.

These books teach you the basics of what every user must know; they can’t make them any easier or straight forward. Stop the guess work, stop your own pain and frustration and just buy this book already The DVD and the exercise files are poor. It’s typical to break down the sections and exercise files into manageable chunks section 3. This book only has one or two exercise files: An end file and a beginning file. Anything goes wrong, consider yourself screwed for the rest of the time.

Chapter 3 is a kluge of a nightmare to read. It’s awful. There is very little description done, no mock-ups are presented, and there is no section content to help out. It also makes no sense. That is not how you do a mockup or layout a grid. The way the author lays out the grid workflow is downright terrible, it’s not a workflow that anyone should use.

It appears to be based around InDesign CS2, not a modern workflow. No one pays for an updated book to show them outdated methods. I will update this book later, but as of now, this is a 3 star book. If anything like that happens again, it’ll be two star.

I have recently started learning Photoshop and thought I should probably see what else the Creative Suite had to offer, so I got the book for InDesign and opened the program for the very first time. I am someone who is usually able to fly through lessons, but this book is designed to give you hands on experience with every feature, and that’s exactly what it does.

The first three lessons familiarize you with how the program works, the tools, menus, etc. That was easy. At lesson four however, I found myself taking smaller bites so that I could make what I was learning stick. This book is a good way to start learning InDesign, but be prepared to take the time to go a bit slower in order to actually learn the program.

All in all, an excellent learning tool. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I’m really excited about this InDesign introduction book. You learn from the beginning how to use the software, but it’s not too simplified but from the very beginning interesting even if you already had experiences with layout programs before like me. The chapters are build like class sessions, very well explained but as said: not simplified, it’s really on the right level and the tasks are reasonable, not only easy to follow but it is even fun to learn.

Each chapter gives the time needed to do it between 45 and 90 minutes ,these times are realistic. I learned what I needed to know. A disadvantage is that the American measures are given pica, inch, not mm or cm but my InDesign could work with these American measurements most of the time. It’s not a book to just look things up but it has an index to do so but it guides you to use InDesign confidently in a didactically very well done way.

Really useful and helpful. I made me confident to use InDesign after not having used it before. Report abuse. This book covers a lot of topics and in decent detail. As an absolute beginner this is a wonderful resource. I purchased the printed version so I could easily refer back to spots in the book should I have any issues. Plus, I prefer having the book near my laptop as I read. The topics range from using artboards to 3d rendering. Each lesson tells you how long approximately it should take you for each lesson.

These were typically on target, a few I spent additional time trying out what was just taught on a few chapters. In a few instances, you will see a shaded box which is a citation from Adobe Help.

It was good to know if you had issues, Adobe Help would go in more detail than the book did. It was slightly annoying too to think most of the items could be in the free Adobe help but at least the book is a nice little compilation in an easy to follow fashion. There were a few spots I got stuck in the book but I did not reset my Illustrator preferences as they instruct at the beginning of each chapter- so be certain you do this.

Overall, I feel more confident in using Illustrator. I do suggest this book for beginners. It even goes over what is new in CS5. One person found this helpful. Not a big fan of these books. Not really a fan of this book series for the adobe products. I have all of them for my creative suite programs. I found it hard to follow. I mean the directions were mainly easy. Sometimes they would leave out a vital step and have me trying to figure out what the heck i did wrong for a half hour.

The main reason I didnt like this book is because it would tell you to do this and that but not tell you why you are doing that. I prefer instructions that tell me why I need this or that step to get the end result. I used the book sometimes but prefer to watch some youtube videos instead. The Illustrator is a complicated program but this book does a good job of explaining various features through lessons.

While following the instructions in the book, I realized how difficult it is for them to describe every step precisely and clearly, in part because the book has to address both PC and Mac users and the program menus and tool settings change depending on the screen resolution of the user computer.

For example, the book asks the reader to click the word Transform but some readers may not see the Transform in the described panel because of their limited screen resolution. So the book describes another way of selecting the Transform. In addition, the Illustrator is highly customizable, so the book reminds the reader to start with the default settings, not just once but over and over again. So the book tries hard not to lose the reader in the lessons by anticipating possible situations the reader may face.

Due to the complexity of the program, every step has to be described very clearly in order for the reader to successfully complete each lesson. Sometimes I was stuck because my result from the previous step was different from what the book expected. I thought the book missed some step or the previous step was incomplete. After spending some time trying to figure out what went wrong, I just corrected the result in my way to match the book’s result.

Considering the complexity of the program and the variety of the user hardware environment, I thought the book does a good job of getting the user started with the Illustrator. I know there is still a long way for me to go but I feel that I have a good foundation to grow from thanks to the book. Very complete. Obvious it was done by people that knew the software and all the different parts and pieces of it. I went through several parts of it and was so impressed I now have four other Classroom in a Book books on my bookshelf.

These books are complete and well written with a ton of examples on the enclosed CD, If you are buying this book used, look for the ad that says the CD is included. It is very helpful. I’m going through chapter 6 right now. I was able to breeze through the first few chapters since I’m familiar with Photoshop and it’s tools.

The information is VERY thorough in that everything is explained well even for someone who has never worked with any Adobe products.
