Click Save Image to save the image to your iPad Photos. Continue this process with each repeat element you want to create. You can draw your repeat elements in a program like Procreate or Adobe Sketch, and then import each drawing into Pixelmator.

To do this, draw each repeat element on a separate document. Next, remove the white background from the canvas, and export each drawing as a PNG file. Swipe from the left side of the screen to open the layers panel. You can leave the background white, or change the background color with these steps: Click the layer, click Format , select Style , turn on Fill, and change the color.

Move, rotate, and resize the elements to your liking being careful not to let any of your drawings touch the edge of the canvas. To move an element, tap the drawing, then use your finger to move it around the canvas.

To rotate an element, click on the layer, click Format , select Arrange , then move the slider. When I organize my repeat elements, I try to vary the distance between the border and the drawings.

Some drawings will be really close to the edge, while others will be inches away from the edge. This helps hide the repeat seam, and gives the repeat a playful scattered look. Click Save Image to save it to your Photos on your computer. Swipe from the left to open the layers panel, then duplicate the layer 3 times by clicking on the layer and clicking Duplicate.

Watch the yellow guides on the top and left axis rulers as you place each repeat block exactly at 0, 0. This is the most important step, so go slow and double check your placement. Once you like the way your repeat looks, save it as a PNG like we did in step 4. Then create a new document that is two times the size of your original canvas. Duplicate the layer 3 times. Place the repeat blocks in each of the four corners of the canvas, using the magnetic ruler guides to be sure you are placing each block exactly at 0,0.

Zoom in to be sure the repeat elements match up perfectly where the repeat squares meet. I think seeing a repeat pattern on products can help you decide if you need to make any changes to your pattern, so I always do this as my last step. Log into your Spoonflower and select Upload in the Design dropdown menu. Upload your PNG file. You could even get started with selling your repeat pattern on Spoonflower!

Select your pattern, then click on the products on the right to see your design for each product. Yes, please. Step Share your repeat pattern with the world! Use Spoonflower on Instagram or Facebook to share your repeat with the Spoonflower community. Unfortunately the most important step, the offsetting, had no information about how to use the guides and try as I might, the guides would never match to zero so my repeat would not line up.

Was I supposed to have all the guides on? Just the centre guides? I wish this had been a video which had included those steps. I regret forking out the money for the programme. I recommend checking it out here. I love these tutorials but I have a request. Please stop putting your links in pale blue.

They are so light. I would love to be able to see who your links go to and see their work. Thank you for your great content. Hi Beth, Thank you for the helpful feedback. Appreciate you reading along with our tutorials! Best, Suz from Spoonflower. I have another question.

In step 7 offsetting the repeat blocks, is there an order to which what tile goes in which quarter of the format? And, do you scale down each tile as it is placed or drag it as it is to 0 and 0? I was happy to try this method.

The workflow went smoothly between the apps. However, in the final step 11 , while using the guides in Pixelmator worked well, for some reason I could not get rid of the join lines between the tiles. It was frustrating to say the least. I also tried not using the guides to lineup the tiles which seemed to work better. Note: When changing the pixel size of an image, the Resolution has absolutely no effect on the actual size or quality of the image.

The standard number used is 72 or , but this is essentially placeholder text for any image sized in pixels. If you need to change the print size of an image, see the section below. So, if you have a 10×10 inch image at PPI, its pixel size would be x This way, changing the resolution will automatically change the print dimensions and vice versa, ensuring the pixel size of the image stays the same.

For web graphics and images, a resolution of 72 PPI is often used as the default, although this is essentially placeholder text as web images should always be sized in pixels. The Bilinear algorithm is more or less the standard in image editing. It tries to naturally smooth edges transitions between light and dark colors by guessing the intermediate colors, so it’s useful for photographic images.

However, this can sometimes cause blurry images especially when upscaling. The Lanczos algorithm is designed to preserve small details when upscaling and downscaling, which is useful for things like graphics, though it’s important to watch out for haloing issues.

The Nearest Neighbor algorithm is mostly used for pixel art, as it copies the color of the nearest neighboring pixels resulting in the classic blocky image look. Unlike the regular scaling algorithms that interpolate the values of pixels mathematically, ML Super Resolution looks at the image itself, analyzing the patterns and textures in it, then recreates visually important details in larger dimensions.

You can achieve great results when upscaling images to even three times their original resolution. To learn more about ML Super Resolution and how we’ve built it, check out our comprehensive blog post. Trim away colored or transparent borders around an image.
